MultiCare opens ‘Neighborhood ER’ in Parkland

TACOMA – MultiCare opened a new neighborhood emergency room in Parkland this month as part of the system’s ongoing effort to improve access to health care in the South Sound, bringing the Parkland community efficient and convenient 24/7 emergency treatment with the same high quality of patient care as hospital-based facilities.

The 10-bed emergency room is named MultiCare Good Samaritan Emergency and will be connected to the clinical teams and services at nearby Good Samaritan Hospital. It offers emergency care by board-certified emergency physicians, but has no inpatient (overnight) beds. The average wait time is expected to be about 15 minutes, with an average length of stay of about 90 minutes.

“MultiCare is committed to developing new and innovative ways to provide care,” wrote Bill Robertson, President and CEO, in a memo to employees. “The neighborhood emergency rooms are another option that will ensure families can get high-quality emergency care when they need it.”

The ER is located at 14815 Pacific Ave. S., about two miles north of the MultiCare Spanaway Clinic. This facility is 10 miles from Good Samaritan and 12 miles from MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital.

The facility offers laboratory services and advanced imaging capabilities, including digital X-ray, ultrasound and CT. It is designed to treat a wide variety of serious illnesses and injuries, including:

  • Acute abdominal pain
  • Allergic reactions
  • Asthma and breathing problems
  • Broken bones
  • Burns
  • Chest pain
  • Dehydration
  • Foreign-object removal
  • Headache
  • Head injuries
  • Infection
  • Pain control (acute pain only, no chronic pain management)
  • Pneumonia
  • Rashes, insect bites, stings
  • Lacerations
  • Sprains and broken bones

The neighborhood ER will be a department of Good Samaritan Hospital and accept the same insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid.

Plans for additional neighborhood emergency rooms in other underserved areas in the South Sound are under development.
